SenseNet Update

SenseNet Update
August 30, 2024

What is SenseNet?
SenseNet is an early wildfire detection and management system that uses AI-based reports from various data sources to detect and predict wildfires quickly.

How Does it Work?
Using data from sensors, cameras, satellites, historical information, weather stations and maps, SenseNet integrates information to detect and predict wildfires and ensure a timely response to prevent spread. Sensors are placed in areas of potential risk and are programmed to alert during the early stages of a fire. Gateways gather the data from the sensors, passing along any alerts. Cameras are used to view and zero in on potential fires as alerted by the sensors.

SenseNet in Harrison Hot Springs
In May of 2024, Council voted in favour of acquiring 100 sensors, 5 gateways and 3 cameras from SenseNet for $174,500 to be funded from general reserves. In July, Council voted in favour of providing an additional $20,000 from reserves to fund the installation. After 2025, the annual subscription cost for monitoring will be $50,000 and will be funded through taxation. The sensors will be placed throughout the East Sector Lands and on the western forested side of the Village beneath the BC Hydro lines.

Additional equipment, including gateways and cameras, will be installed on the Harrison Hot Springs Fire Hall, the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa, the Harrison Yacht Club building and the Village’s Water Reservoir. If smoke is detected by any sensor, the Village will be alerted and will initiate the appropriate response.

Project Timeline
Installation is scheduled to start September 4th, 2024. The installation will occur in phases. Please note that installation schedules may be adjusted due to weather or site conditions.
